NHTG announces plans for Heritage Building Contractors Register

10 October 2008, In response to the NHTG Traditional Building Craft Skills in England 2008 research the NHTG Executive Committee has established a Heritage Building Contactors Registration Working Group to develop guidelines and selection criteria for this unified register.

The group is assessing existing registration schemes to develop an outline framework with standard selection criteria, which takes into account the need for sector-wide support, but recognising differences between the various craft trades.  The Lead Contractors Association members list and National Federation of Roofing Contractors, Heritage Contractors Register are being used as sector models and a starting point to inform this research.

This is being undertaken in conjunction with English Heritage, but will be circulated in due course for consultation with other heritage bodies, trade federations and trade unions. The Working Group will present its initial proposals on how the project will be taken forward to the NHTG Executive Committee at in November 2008 and report back at agreed intervals on its development.
