Being an Apprentice
An apprentice at work

It can take 2-3 years to achieve your qualifications as an apprentice and then will you be able to specialise in conservation and restoration. You need to join a company that specialises to some extent on conserving, restoring, repairing and maintaining historic buildings so that they can provide you with lots of interesting experiences during your training.

An employer will help to fund your apprenticeship training and in return, will expect commitment from you to your training and the company. Show talent, commitment, a willingness to learn and get qualified and your employer will support you and help you develop your skills.

There are opportunities to be an apprentice whatever your age. Find out more by contacting CITB-ConstructionSkills.

You can also download (PDF, 1.2MB) the NHTG Careers in Conservation and Restoration Brochure which contains information and guidance for careers both in the craft skills and for built heritage professionals.
