Bricklaying
A bricklayer

The skill

You can expect a variety of challenges with this job. Bricklayers often have to work quickly on a building site, but when repairing and replacing bricks on an historic building or wall, you need patience and an eye for detail. You will need to learn about the different methods of laying (bonding) the bricks over the centuries and the changes in pointing that have occurred.

The person

You need to enjoy working outdoors and be comfortable working on scaffolding at a height. You need an eye for detail because historic brickwork is not always uniform.

As you progress in your career you can expect to work on the more ornate brickwork and to learn the skills for “cutting and rubbing” bricks and producing different styles of pointing to reflect the age of the building or wall you are working on.
