The skillIt is important that carpenters and joiners understand how different types of wood may be used and affected by different conditions, such as moisture content and shrinkage. There is a lot of problem solving involved and you need to know about the quantity of materials that are required to do the job in hand. You can choose to specialise in either carpentry or joinery and expect to work alongside other craftspeople.
The jobYou will work in a workshop using a range of different woods to prepare components such as windows, doors, staircases and furniture. Joiners are required to make sympathetic repairs to existing features as well as create exact copies of originals. CarpentersYou will make, fix or install replacement components to buildings. Your work will vary from structural work to floors and roofs to internal work on architraves, door frames, skirting boards and door frames as well as fixing doors and cupboards. Structural timber framingThis is a specialised craft and requires the skill to work with major timbers to repair and re-construct historic buildings such as barns, farm buildings, houses and even Elizabethan Theatres, like The Globe Theatre in London. Millwrights are specialist craftspeople who repair historic wind and water mills and also have to work with large timbers and structures. The personYou will need to be good at calculating angles and making measurements so it helps if you are good at maths. If you want to be a carpenter or millwright you ’ll need to enjoy working outdoors.
