Wall and Floor Tiler

Floor Tiling (C) Bob HowardWall and floor tilers work on a range of tiled surfaces, for example, encaustic and geometric floor tiles, hand dipped or hand painted tiles of different historical periods. These will have been adhered to the surface behind with different bonding materials, such as, plaster or mortar.

In historic buildings their work will often involve careful removal of tiles that are damaged or have become loose or detached from the surface behind, carrying out repairs or replacement of individual tiles, or cleaning and re-instating tiled surfaces to integrate with the original tiled scheme.

The specialised area of tile conservation is usually undertaken by specialist conservators and this group is represented by the professional body the Institute of Conservation (ICON), which has an accreditation process and register, visit www.icon.org.uk .
