Apprenticeships
Allow you to get qualified and earn a wage at the same time. It is normal for an apprenticeship to be linked to a Vocational Qualification (S/NVQ) which means that you will have to gain on-site work experience to contribute to your qualification. From 2005, apprenticeships are due to be available to both young people (16-24 year olds) and people over 25 years of age.

S/NVQs
These qualifications are designed to test competence in the workplace, and are assessed on the basis of portfolios of evidence provided by the candidates. Each qualification comprises a set of Units and Elements, which form part of an industry-wide matrix.
