NHTG Training the Trainers

Structural Carpentry TrainingTraining the Trainers is a programme developed by the National Heritage Training Group (NHTG) with the specific aim of up-skilling and improving the knowledge and understanding of existing college lecturers and assessors of the approach to and methods involved in building conservation, repair, maintenance and restoration. This will support FE colleges in making use of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) in Heritage Skills to deliver courses relevant to the Heritage Skills NVQ Level 3 qualification.

This 3-module programme uses the knowledge and expertise of leading industry experts and key heritage organisations to provide underpinning theoretical knowledge, hands-on experience and mentoring for college lecturers. The NHTG has supported the development of the NOS and the Heritage Skills qualification and has developed this programme so that FE colleges and assessment centres can assist in the drive for an appropriately qualified and skilled workforce to care for our built heritage.

Programme

The programme comprises three one-week modules:

Module 1: Introduction to general conservation principles and approach to historic buildings, with some practical demonstrations

Module 2: Site-based practical work experience for specific craft trades

Module 3: Refresher on principles and methods of delivering conservation and restoration within colleges

The programme is delivered by industry specialists, experts in their own craft skill discipline or conservation field. It includes hands-on practical experience gained through on-site work experience at historic building sites or training centres.
