About the London Region Heritage Skills Action Group

The London Region Heritage Skills Action Group grew from the London and South East activities of the Conference on Training in Architectural Conservation (COTAC) and the pan-London network developed by the Building Crafts College (an accredited Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in Traditional Building Crafts). This was closely allied to, and involved many of the same interested parties as the SPAB initiative to create a traditional Building Skills Action Group (BSAG).  It has met five times since its inaugural meeting in 2006.  Its first task was to develop an Action Plan based on members’ priorities, which were tabulated under the main headings of the national plan emerging from NHTG research in England

The London Regional Group is unique in being able to engage national conservation organisations based in London, including national amenity societies and professional bodies and tap into the expertise and training opportunities provided by work on the many heritage buildings in London which are of national and international importance.

In terms of workforce London also has an important relationship with the home counties of the adjacent East and South of England regions; many of the firms undertaking work in London are based outside the capital and many students reside in the home counties but travel daily into London.  Equally, some important heritage training resources in the home counties are within easy reach of London.

It is not surprising therefore that many of the individuals involved in the London Region Group are themselves involved in several different heritage organisations. The Group enjoys the active representation of the following stakeholder groups:

  • London Development Agency
  • Learning and Skills Council
  • English Heritage
  • Historic Royal Palaces
  • Royal Parks
  • City of London Livery Companies
  • City & Guilds of London Institute
  • ConstructionSkills
  • London Region Construction Skills Forum
  • London Construction Training Providers Network
  • Specialist contractors undertaking heritage and conservation work
  • Professional and heritage bodies
  • Buildings and open air museums.

The Group is coordinated jointly by English Heritage London Region, and the Building Crafts College.Chairman.
