Skills London 2008
01 December 2008, NHTG partnered with ConstructionSkills' Recruitment and Careers team to create a walk-through display at the major Skills London careers event held at the Excel exhibition centre in London Docklands from 20-22 November 2008. London Mayor, Boris Johnson and Sir Michael Latham joined young people from across Greater London to have a go at a variety of construction careers at the Skills London event.
This industry-wide careers event gave the construction industry an opportunity to showcase careers and opportunities to employers, schools and colleges.
The event attracted more than 40,000 young people over three days. The Construction Showcase exhibition stand, run in partnership with the National Training Heritage Group, gave young people the opportunity to find out more about, and have a go at the many construction careers that are available in the industry.
Demonstrations and hands-on opportunities included fibrous plastering, carpentry and joinery, structural timber framing, stonemasonry, lead working, thatching, brickwork, decorative finishes and stained glass and a display reflecting professional level careers.
A young visitor to the stand, Rebecca Scarger said: "I would definitely consider a career in construction. You can be so creative."
Vanessa Coomber had a go at the plastering display at the exhibition. She said "I love getting messy. I didn't know construction could be so fun."
