All Souls Bolton

05 September 2008, As one of the first major projects of the North West Heritage Skills Hub, ConstructionSkills are partnering with the Churches Conservation Trust at All Souls Church in Bolton to develop and pilot workable contract causes facilitating training as part of a repair and maintenance contract on the building.

All Souls Bolton Tower

The project to refurbish the 19th century church and return it to sustainable use as a community space is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Works and Training Contract sub-project will document the delivery of training and education as an integral part of the grant-aided works, working with the supply chain from an early stage to develop workable contract clauses which will be implemented and tested through the project.

Proposed outcomes are:

1. A generic training and education plan for The Churches Conservation Trust works, which could then be worked up for other stockholders.

2. Descriptive items for a schedule of works/tender specification, to cover all potential training and education elements.

3. Training-related contract clauses suitable for addition to a range of standard construction contracts, e.g. JCT.

The Churches Conservation Trust plans to adopt the model from this project for their future contracts and it will also provide a valuable case study for ConstructionSkills’ ongoing work with English Heritage in this area, with clear potential to have very significant national impact.
