Monument Watch Scheme considered for Scotland's Built Heritage

30 June 2009, Colin Tennant (CEO – Scottish Stone Liaison Group) met Aileen Campbell MSP (Parliamentary Liaison Officer to the Office of the First Minister of the Scottish Government) on 30 June to discuss Monument Watch. Monument Watch is operated in several European countries and is aimed at owners of heritage buildings.

The scheme involves an annual survey of the property to outline what, if any, work is required and guidance is provided on how to engage a reputable contractor to undertake the work.

Colin had given a presentation at the March meeting of the Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Construction. This was followed up with a question at the launch of  “Get Scotland Building” which resulted in the meeting with Ms Campbell.

He outlined the need for repair and ongoing maintenance to Scotland’s built heritage and the benefits of Monument Watch. The benefits of the scheme to the property owner, the appearance of the built heritage, the safety of those walking past buildings, contractors, stone suppliers, apprentices, etc.

It was a very good meeting lasting over one and a half hours. Ms Campbell offered to write to four members of the Cabinet to highlight the scheme.
