Skills Heritage in Portsmouth
07 September 2008, Following the demise of the BA in Restoration and Decorative Studies at the University of Portsmouth, Debbie Robins established the SHIP (Skills Heritage in Portsmouth) initiative to try to carry forward the legacy of the BA course and to provide a continued centre of excellence in Portsmouth.
Because the decorative skills concerned are not readily taught or demonstrated anywhere else in the surrounding area, Debbie’s project exists to encourage, educate and inform people about these skills and ensure they are passed on to future generations. In the short term the project will offer tuition, demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops and lectures to stimulate interest in the subject whilst the Cell Block building at the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth is being converted into a dedicated centre. In particular SHIP hopes to become accredited to teach these skills to a nationally recognised qualification standard by becoming affiliated with a local further education college.
Regional Group Support
SERCSAG is supporting the project and hopes it will become a model of best practice, demonstrating how private education providers can become part of the national qualifications framework.
