Powys Townscape Heritage Initiative benefits from pioneering programme of bespoke heritage training

24 July 2008, Powys County Council in partnership with ConstructionSkills in Wales and the NHTG delivered a pioneering programme of one-day courses as part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) in Llandrindod Wells (read more).

This THI grant scheme was established in 2004, with the objective of raising awareness of the local built heritage, improving historic buildings by ensuring high quality repair and reinstatement and regenerating the historic environment within Llandrindod’s Town Centre. The scheme was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, European Objective 2, Welsh Assembly Government, Cadw and Powys County Council.

The four one-day courses were delivered by experts either based in Wales or located close to Wales to 60 participants and covered:

  • Conservation principles
  • Practical hands-on sessions
  • The use of and dressing lead; lime mortars; repair and conservation of brickwork; repair of sash windows and architectural detail.

This helped improve the knowledge, understanding and practical application of traditional building methods and materials for local contractors, craftspeople, trainees, FE college trainers and building professionals involved in the conservation, repair and maintenance of pre-1919 heritage buildings.
