Visitors keep traditions alive at Lichfield Cathedral
12 September 2008, Visitors learnt the art of traditional stone masonry during the medieval Cathedral’s first in a series of ‘Have A Go’ experience sessions.
On Thursday September 11th, Croft Building & Conservation Ltd. gave lessons to budding stonemasons from around the region, enabling them to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship involved in this incredible building. Participants were shown some basic techniques in the art of stonemasonry and were able to demonstrate their new skills on local stone blocks. Visitors came from as all over Staffordshire and as far afield as East Sussex.
Tim Pain Chief Officer of Lichfield Cathedral commented: “We are very pleased to be able to offer such a unique experience to the community and delighted to see visitors learning how the Cathedral was built and the unique art of stonemasonry. This aspect of Cathedral architecture is a key part of the Lichfield InSpires project restoration work and one which will keep traditions alive for centuries to come.”
